  47. As soon as you turn on the computer
  48. the BIOS chips come to life. BIOS
  49. stands for Basic Input Output
  50. System.  The computer has one or
  51. more of these ROM (Read Only
  52. Memory) chips.  The BIOS is the
  53. first step in telling the computer
  54. who it is.  The Central Processing
  55. Unit (CPU chip) is the main
  56. thinking part of the computer, but
  57. so far, it has no thoughts to think
  58. about.  The BIOS hooks it up to
  59. other parts, places where thoughts
  60. can be stored.  The BIOS tells it
  61. how to talk with the disk drives,
  62. the RAM (Random Access Memory), the
  63. keyboard and the monitor.
